They are very tightly regulated. In fact, of the more than 300,000 in the US only 3 have ever been used in a crime, and two those were by cops.

(Note the words “used in a crime”. The number of registered full-auto weapons that have been used to kill someone in lawful self defense or in the course of police action is somewhere above 30.)
