You know, if your town “lives for football” then maybe it’s time to develop other hobbies. Also, and I say this as someone married to a former college football player (who lost his scholarship in chemical engineering because of serious injuries and never got to finish school- his family couldn’t afford it), why is so much money in college tied to sports? Shouldn’t there be a lot of other things we could tie it to instead? In state after state, the highest earning state employee is a college football coach, and no one bats an eyelash, but heaven forbid a high school teacher make 50K a year, why that’s criminal.

I was harassed and bullied in high school constantly by football players and cheerleaders. A friend of mine shot herself (and survived) over the bullying and no one did a fucking thing about it. Because they were valuable and the rest of us weren’t. My son went through the same thing. Athletes should be held to a VERY high standard if they’re going to be put on a pedestal, but they aren’t. I blame the adults in charge for this shit, but at a certain point a young adult needs to be held to account too. A town is divided over this? There’s your priorities. I wish people would get that pissed off over homelessness, poverty and violence.
