Gates is a man who got his money the old-fashioned way: He bought somebody else’s work for cheap, filed off the serial numbers, and sold it as his own at a severe mark-up.

His original work was really his - his very good basic compiler. Just don’t ask how they used the Navy PDP-11 to code it when that was provided to Harvard on a strictly “no commercial uses” basis. That started MS and the rest is crime and history.
