Former PM Cameron was trying to checkmate UKIP and it blew up in his face. That being said, it’s beyond me why the current government of PM May is pursuing it so single-mindedly. As you pointed out, it was a strictly non-binding referendum, a glorified opinion poll.

I also don’t get why May and the Tories are so fanatical about Brexit. Surely, they must realize at some level it’s a colossal cock-up, one that will be associated with the Conservative Party for years to come.
