I assume that started out as a cynical snark, but given Poe’s Law, was taken up at face value.
Like people who think that “Born in the USA” is a patriotic song.
I don’t think it was cynical snark; I know people who think precisely like that, Super Ni-CLANG bulletproof strength.
That attitude gets the “he reached for his [gum, cell phone, waist, nothing] and I feared for my life so I had to kill him” attitude.
