This has got to be - to some degree, at least - wishful thinking on the part of the racists. Maybe thirty years ago, they might have made some headway. These days? Surely, most people react with revulsion?

I’d say you are speaking for the vast majority, but there is still a sizable minority that is overtly, or quietly racist. Most estimate it at 10-15% of the population. As to the revulsion, look at some of racist e-mails we all get now and then.
