Bears are apex predators, there’s nothing that really keeps them in check besides us. American black bears, in particular, are a fairly numerous species and could probably do with some additional control.
Good point. Found some elk calf bones in the forest about a year or so ago. Lots of chewing marks. My guess is a recently woken up black bear caught an elk calving and the calf became dinner.
Maybe we need to start a thing for people to have bear rugs again… O_o
