Sounding political before all the evidence is documented would have been a bad approach. He has to sound like non-political law-enforcement that will catch criminal politicians. Right now, that’s Republicans, but you can’t just say so as head of law enforcement.

There’s also a point where being non-political in the face of multiple years of the DOJ *being* political and a lot of one-sided abuse makes people think that nothing will be done beyond hand-wringing and expressing “concern”. Because both parties are the same with different labels and there is no interest in really fixing things or addressing the issues.

(Tossing a bunch of low-level fools into the clink for a few years may look nice, but it’s decoration.)
