I’m going to get attacked for this but:

Between the two sides in that war (China & Cambodia vs. Vietnam), Vietnam were probably the side I would root for. Ho Chi Minh was bad, but Mao and Pol Pot were way worse.

Uncle Ho was more of a nationalist at heart and would have been happy, I believe, to have become a US orbit state had we kept FDR’s word and not let the French back in. The others in the region, as you correctly note, were much much worse.

These days, the American War is old history to the majority of the population that have been born since 1980. The Chinese, OTOH, are a regular threat right on their doorstep.
