I’m not much interested in nuance, but the fact that he is cold-blooded is part of why he is more interesting to me than most spree killers. A mentally ill mass killer does not reveal much to me beyond some occasional institutional and societal failings, and further makes me worry about making sure my own head is on straight.

Dorner, by contrast, acted according to a plan that shows knowledge of tracking countermeasures and ambush tactics. While terrifying, such tactics do interest a part of my mind, since I always am interested in “how to fight” stories. Learning how an effective ambush is staged gives insight into how to survive an ambush.

Maybe, but it didn’t work for the Navy Seal. The nature of Ambush is surprise. You can’t be alert 100% of the time, no matter how many guns you own.
