Whether I bid early or late, I always put in the highest price I am willing to pay and look away. I don’t check again until the auction is over.

If you do it through the eBay GUI, it just drives the prices up in real time. Get something like AuctionSniper and use that. The prices stay low and you will likely get what you want if you put in a reasonable price.

I bid what I will most pay and then allow extra cycles (like 2x) for it to increase by like $5 a cycle. I have won almost every bid I created without paying out the nose.
