I’ve been investigating various places to “retire” too. I know things may change in the next 6 or so years (I’m opting for early retirement) but Australia and Greenland have been on my shortlist. How does the political and economic climates between Icleand and Greenland compare? (no pun intended)

Psychologically, politically and economically (and geographically!) Iceland is right between Europe and the US, perhaps similar to some of your blue states. The current political and economic climate is not very good, we were an early casualty of the economic downturn (first leftist government in 18 years was voted in this spring), but we’ll get over it in under 6 years!
