Those aren’t in the least bit equivalent. At all. The 2nd amendment is absolutely clearly archaic. It begins with a section about militias that everyone agrees is completely irrelevant to modern society; it also begins by stating the reason for the amendment is the need for those militias.

The reliance of gun advocates on the 2nd amendment is really, really aggravating to people like me. We have plenty of dangerous things in our society and we manage to regulate them and deal with them based on the general principles of law, property ownership, society, and the government not being allowed to disallow things without cause. The only major place we fuck up on this is the drug war, where we don’t allow people to own things that aren’t harmful to others, but that’s a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.

The inability of gun advocates to make an argument without relying on the 2nd amendment shows the weakness of many of their arguments. If you can’t argue against a regulation without resorting to the 2nd amendment, then your argument is weak as hell.
