“Immature age”? Jong-un is apparently around 30 years old. He’s led a very sheltered life, and not much is known about him so much of what the intel services know is through supposition and not hands-on knowledge.

That said, he might be a complete nutjob like his dad, or he might actually have an independent streak, though that’s not likely considering that Jong-il passed over his older two sons to pick Jong-un. Jong-il must have seen something in Jong-un that he liked - and his young age means that barring some unfortunate accident or massive change in North Korean politics, he’s going to be around for a good long time to come.

You do know why the older two sons were passed over, don’t you? No, apparently not.

In 2001, the oldest son used a false passport to enter Japan. He wanted to go to Disneyland Tokyo. He was caught, and extradited to China. The embarrassment on several levels had him removed. Since then he’s become something of a wastrel.

The second son was “it” till around 2007. Actually, there were signs he wasn’t going to be it starting in 2003. There’s no clear evidence why, but rumor (with some substantiation but not proof) is that he’s effeminate in demeanor and possibly homosexual. The youngest son was designated heir in 2007. The second son has been stuck as a division head of ‘the party’ since his move there in 2005.

It isn’t so much that the father saw something in the third son he liked, it’s that the other two (and culturally preferred) choices removed themselves from the running and it’s all he had left.
