There were rumors the Germans grew to recognize the sound and timed their attacks for when the American rifles were empty, but I don’t think there is any substantive evidence to support it. It was, however, taken seriously enough that the Springfield Armory started experiments with plastic disposable Garand clips.
one drawback of a Garand was that it was not possible to top up a clip that had already been fired from, you had to wait until it popped its clip and reload a whole new one.
