I think they are genuinely surprised at the intensely negative reaction, thus proving the insular bubble they inhabit. I think they expected applause, not “we are so sick of your hateful shit.” That Gov Brewer is taking so long to veto this foul bill is quite telling as well.

There wasn’t any reversal on the part of Republicans after the backlash from SB1070 (the anti-immigrant bill), and that backlash was stronger, louder, and more sustained. I think some Repubs just discovered that many gay people are white and have plenty of money, and some are even members of their Party.
