Because I’ve traveled, I get “asked” about foreign policy by the wingnuts I know.

Half the time what I say simply doesn’t register, because what they’re really waiting for is the chance to shout or sneer whatever slogan they’ve picked up.

The other half of the time they let me explain something in great detail…at which point they get really quiet because they don’t have any details of their own…but it doesn’t stick. Once they go back into an environment that rewards repetition of thought-destroying cliches, all the information just becomes moot.

This always stuns with w/r/t Middle East stuff, because people have opinions with such anger and heat behind them…and no fucking information. Not too long ago I had a nice, but somewhat gullible, dude tell me that Iran already and nukes, and that the Iran negotiations were “bad” because Obama (bonus ignorance points for not knowing about the other nations involved in the talks) was going to let them keep them.

Depressingly, the same guy keeps coming back to me with bewilderment over Trump’s support of legislation that fucks him over, like the AHCA. And I keep saying “why did you believe this man, and not ask any questions about his background? Because a slight dip into his business history suggests that he succeeds only by fucking over his investors.” I’m beginning to lose my patience.
