re: #49 lawhawk

CNN headline story currently has a woman from coal country lamenting that if President Obama is reelected, it’s the end of the industry.

Fact is that fracking will do more to end the coal industry than anything Obama is doing (which is basically calling for improved emissions at power generating facilities).[…]

That natural gas also happens to be less polluting and is more energy efficient than coal at point of power production doesn’t help coal. …

Well, there is a lot of dispute over how much natural gas production does pollute, but nevertheless, the market strength of natural gas over coal doesn’t have anything to do with pollution but from two important facts about natural gas: (1) it’s more universally distributed around the planet, and (2) today it is more useful and easier to transport (which wasn’t true in the past.)

The only thing coal is better at than natural gas is as coke in metal production.

What many Americans also don’t realize is that the highest quality of coal, anthracite, peaked in production many years ago, and the US has been using over time lower and lower quality coal. Given our large resource base of low quality coal that hasn’t been a limitation in use, but it has meant more ash and misc pollutants result from the burning of the coal.
