There are a lot of white people who don’t see themselves as racists who think that too much attention has been paid to minority issues.

I’m not sure how to appeal to them without telling the minorities who make up the backbone of the Democratic Party to cool it for a few more years while we take care of the White Working Class’s concerns.

This is why Bernie, with his ‘It’s all economics!’ approach didn’t get much traction with minorities. Yes, what he talked about is a problem, but for them, it’s been a problem all their lives, and all those things that helped the WWC helped them less.

I see a whole lot of ‘The Dems need a message that appeals to both!’ and not a whole lot of ‘Here’s that message!’

And then you have situations like the little Illinois town that voted 70% for the yam, and are now up in arms because their undocumented friend and townsperson is being deported. But does it make them open their eyes and see that maybe they’ve been looking at things the wrong way? Of course not. They say shit like, “I knew he was Mexican, but he’s been here so long, he’s just one of us,” said Debra Johnson, a resident. She said she saw a distinction between “people who come over and use the system and people who actually come and help.”
