It’s not as well known but a lot of people thought Charles Evans Hughes defeated Woodrow Wilson in 1916 too. NO famous photo of a smiling Wilson with a headline though. That’s an interesting what if for history btw that feels pertinent to bring up as we near the centennial for WWI ending.
And the Republican representative for NM-2 vacated the seat to run for Governor and lost.
He probably would have won reëlection to the US House, so that counts for two losses in one.
