Why Europe?
Might I suggest a third world country?
How about one with a power structure differing from representative (or any other) democracy?
Eye- opening, to be sure, but not for the faint of heart.

Because I’m very attached to my standard of living (aka technology, indoor plumbing, etc.). I make my living as an ‘IT guy’ and have been on computers since I was a child, I’m very comfortable in admitting that I probably don’t have what it takes to live in a third world country.

I was planning on taking a trip next year for around a month or so, visiting different places and trying to learn more about the various European nations before making a decision. I’ve even given some thought to places like Japan, and of course Australia (and NZ) have crossed my mind as well.
