None of the GOP candidates in 2016 offered anything but empty bullshit. Trump did it the best. Between that and the expedited coarsening of the GOP in the last 10-12 years (a combination of losing the culture war, the economic disaster of the end of the Bush Administration, and the growing xenophobia of aging white people), a candidate like Trump makes sense. Unfortunately, the GOP doesn’t have the internal mechanics that the Democratic Party has to prevent a disaster nomination like Trump.

As for the general, we’ve had the discussion before, but I think Clinton was simply the perfect foil for him.

I think you’re right. I think she was teh right candidate but I do think you’re right. She was a perfect foil for him. Fortunately, I don’t see him having the same benefit in 2020.
