I do not understand the virgin birth. I always thought it was Mary who was the virgin but my Catholic raised husband said it was actually Mary’s mother who was the virgin. Which makes even less sense to me.

I think he got it a bit mixed up: the Immaculate Conception refers to how Mary was conceived without the stain of Original Sin by her parents, Anna and Joachim.
