Had Trump been willing to say “What I did was wrong, but not impeachable,” I doubt that House Dems would have even been able to find the votes to censure him. Blue Dog Dems would have felt too pressured to just let the matter go in the lead-up to an election year to support such a move. And Pelosi would have likely seen the optics of a House censure but Senate rebuff as not even worth the effort.

Which is why claiming that this was a hoax or done to overturn 2016 is absurd. Pelosi could have started an inquiry based of Mueller’s findings. I think it would have been harder than what’s happened here but she could have. She did not. Trump’s refusal to even acknowledge the slightest wrong doing is going to be his and his party’s undoing here in the end IMO.
