That’s not what the AZ law is about. It doesn’t allow nonsense stops for folks with good tans. If the cops interact with somebody for an infraction of the law or other problem, they can ask about immigrations status.

I understand your interest in making the law sound like a terrible infringement upon the rights of hispanics, but it’s just not going to do that. We have a very similar law here in OK, and I don’t see hispanics getting harassed or run off. AZ has a big problem with crime caused by members of Mexican drug cartels and human smuggling operations. Hopefully this law will help them get control of the crime, and hopefully it won’t be more than a minor inconvenience for folks who aren’t criminals. All people will have to do is produce ID and interact pleasantly with police officers.

The law still remains open for a lot of abuse. Cops aren’t immigration officers. They uphold the law and particularly the 4th Amendment re legal search and seizure.

As to your comment upthread about “illegals” and driver’s licenses, there are many people in this country living, working and going to school who are not citizens. But that doesn’t mean they are “illegal”. They’re here on legal visas. They have to get around, why shouldn’t they drive?
