Hey all -

Been looking at a lot of this stuff on and off throughout the day.

While none of it removes the physics of CO2 reflecting infrared, I’d say that Mann and a few others may end up in an unrecoverable position insofar as their professional reputations are concerned.

Setting all of that aside - the bulk of the code is in - gulp - Fortran. And it isn’t particularly well written. It is an unstructured language, but has had things added to it over the years like subroutines that makes it a little more manageable. But geez - even in the late 90s Fortran was considered 2GL and inappropriate for any new and ambitious coding. No wonder why they need big hardware to run models and big budgets to manage them.

Anyways - most of the code looks to be mundane stuff. But if this is typical of what climate scientists write for models they could stand to move their clocks forward about 25 years in terms of building a more manageable, reusable and auditable code base.
