re: #584 dog philosopher

if the morons in the ‘tea party’ were around then, we would be hearing all about how the bible clearly says that it is god’s plan for commoners to be ruled by kings, and it is sacrilege for them to overturn god’s anointed rulers - since this was actually the stated position of the conservatives of the time

That wouldn’t surprise me and it wouldn’t surprise me further if they embraced absolute monarchy. A lot of things we take for granted are due to the work of small letter l- liberals and small letter p-progressives. People who challenged the divine right of kings, the power of one religion to rule supreme over others. Ironically, it’s the same Separation of Church laws that they despise that have allowed the evangelical churches to flourish. Jefferson’s famous letter regarding the wall of church and state was to Baptists. Baptists who at the time I’m sure valued the separation of church and state given that many came from parts of the world where their religion was actually discriminated against because it wasn’t the state religion.
