No, not at all. Specter’s move is political calculation pure and simple - it his best bet to win re-election next year.
That’s right. It’s his best bet because a moderate can’t win the Republican primary. But the kind of candidates Republicans seem to be choosing in primaries can’t win the general. So, to say that Specter left because he wanted to win is an indictment of the Republican party’s willingness to support candidates that will appeal across party lines, which is essential since Republicans are a shrinking minority of the electorate.
