re: #587 calcajun

We showed them trees a thing or two. Should have bypassed the whole thing.

Cripes, this place is addicting.

OK—real fast again. Since the public today seems to think that this country never had a military screw-up until Vietnam and that all wars are scripted by Hollywood, here’s a list of uniquely American blunders from WWII

1. Kasserine Pass
2. Anzio
3. Not asking anyone how big the hedgerows were in the Norman Bocage countryside.
4. Leaving all winter gear on the Normandy Beaches because “the war will be over by Christmas” (that one belongs to Gen. Bradley)
5. B-17’s don’t need fighter escort
6. The advance through the Voseges Mountains in France
7. Lt. Gen. Clark’s decision to take Rome instead of cutting off the line of retreat for the whole German Army in Italy
8. No tanks can move through the Ardennes (not only a mistake-but we repeated a FRENCH mistake)
9. Pelilu
10. Attu
11. Kiska—all three did not need to be taken
12. Market-Garden

back to work…really

Good list. Too many people know next to nothing about WWII. I can mention the Battle of Midway and get blank stares. Making matters even worse is the fact that Chicago’s second airport is named after that battle!
