Jerry Pournelle is an excellent writer of military sci-fi. His two books that tell the story of an insurgency on the planet Sparta are very good and very informative as to the nature of insurgency and counter-insurgency.

I prefer Niven’s work. His Ringworld imaginings were impressive. I’m far more into science than the military.
