It seems to me lowering the price of food so that more people can afford to buy food is a pretty good idea.

On principle yes. I’ve found though because I’ve actually done the price checking for a couple business plans, that in the case of a large store like Walmart there isn’t a huge difference between it and other stores prices with fresh food. Produce and other staple foods are quite comparable and not very different. Most meats aren’t that much cheaper either. The processed stuff is way, way cheaper though, especially with Walmart’s own brand. The same frozen dinner, pizza and chips cost way less at a Wal-mart then at the other stores sometimes to the tune of a couple of dollars. Things like processed cheeses are dirt cheap compared to other stores. I’ve seen cheese slices for instance on for two bucks (compared to three or four) and the bin is pretty much empty.
