Republicans can’t actually de-escalate the situation by admitting error, because their entire culture over decades has been about stoking resentment and demonizing the opposition. You can see each individual trying to gauge if there’s a way to save their branding by finding the exact level of stepping away from Trump then can do without triggering the base.

They can only demand that others de-escalate with the threat of more harm, or create whataboutist chaff.
