Argo Screw Yourself! Why Django Unchained Was the Only Movie That Mattered at the Oscars - Reason.com

I can’t say much about Argo since I didn’t see it, but I did see Django Unchained (and I’ll further preface that I am a huge Tarantino fan).

The key to a movie winning at the Academy Awards isn’t always which is best, it’s the movie whose producers and media flaks do the best job of convincing the voters that this is the most significant performance/song/tech achievement/direction/movie.

I thought that the story and te performances in Django were superb. In fact, I would have considered DiCaprio’s performance to be superior to that of Waltz (who did win Best Supporting Actor at both the Oscars and Golden Globes), but DiCaprio wasn’t nominated. But I also thought that the movie wandered in the middle act and could have been edited down to make it a more compact and better paced movie. So, I get why Django didn’t win.

Yet, in 20 years, which is the movie that will have more of a cultural and societal impact? It wont be Argo. It will be Django (a similar issue with Goodfellas not winning in favor of Forest Gump).
