Yeah: that’s the thing: that “base” has, so far been the (mangy) tail that’s wagged the (sick, fleabitten) dog in the GOP: but on a national level, they are going to need more than that. In my estimation - in my authoritative capacity as Some Random Guy On The Internet - the political dynamics in 2018 are that Trump’s base of support is very deep, but narrow: the “Opposition”/”Resistance” is very wide but shallow. Which side is going to have more momentum/motivation going into the midterms is going to be of vital importance.

As long as Trump can continue to fool his base into thinking he’s winning, they’ll support him. But once he founders, all but the very loyal will turn on him. Already, people who have lost jobs or haven’t seen the immediate return of coal and factory jobs are pissed at Trump for betraying them.
