We cannot afford to burn the oil and gas we have. It is effectively worthless and at some point “the markets” are going to have to realise that.

“We” aren’t willing to pay the price for CO2-free energy and “we” aren’t willing to do without energy. Oil and gas and coal are cheap considering only the sticker price and that’s what “we” are interested in, nothing else.

I’ve got one of those “engineering solutions to people problems” that would produce more than enough energy for everyone on the planet with no perceptible CO2 emissions plus enough of a surplus to actively decarbonise the atmosphere and get it back safely to 280ppm CO2 in a century or so. The approximate price tag is a quadrillion dollars aka the current US military budget for 150 years, but it’s not going to happen because it requires building lots and lots and lots of EVIL! nuclear reactors (about 40,000 of them).
