It’s pretty obvious what went wrong here. The mental health system failed badly, as for all of the laws on the books about preventing mentally ill people from buying weapons, there turned out to be no good way of doing that. Since the solutions to these problems involve government, and there is no such thing as a good government service in the Tea party ideology, they’re going to play for time. Frankly having someone who turns up at every meeting and calls these delaying tactics criminal is a good thing. We’ve known about these issues for years no and nothing has happened. Maybe a survivor speaking out will get something done.

That isn’t it. What is true is that conservatives (including David Frum and me) are by nature hostile to ideas that in involve more government. Conservatives react this way because we fear that giving government more power leads to government using that power in abusive and anti-freedom fashion.
