Personally, I laugh at the hoarding of gold. If the government collapses, as they seem to think it will, then what is gold worth? Answer: What the other guy believes it’s worth. So you may sit on a pile gold coins to make Scrooge McDuck blush, but if the guys sitting on the water and food think gold is worthless, then you’re fraked.

Right. It’s nonsense. It would have no value to most people in a total apocalyptic setting. Food, water, weapons, medical supplies, etc. are what would have value.
