I am hearing a short-u/schwa sound, and a soft velar consonant, k or g, at the end of the word.

I’m filling in ‘punks’, because it makes sense, and because ‘pungs’ doesn’t mean anything.

Try as I may, I can’t fill in ‘coons’. The vowel sounds too far off.

He kind of has a “mouthful voice” as it is. That is he sounds like he’s got half a sandwich in mouth or something.
