That would have been William Brennan, who was subjected to a “will you be taking your marching orders from the Vatican?” drilling when his hearings were held in 1956. I read those hearings one night when I was supposed to be shelling books in my university’s law library. I knew of course how Kennedy had been treated in 1960; I had no idea similar questions were being asked of Brennan.
