Perhaps they were expecting to find someone alive in there and did not.

I suspect the village rumour mill will fill me in on what’s going on over there.

My town is so small folk will sometimes just walk into my house when we’re here without ringing the doorbell first. They also know what we’re having for dinner before we do.
