Dad would always get depressed on Memorial Day and Veterans Day because he didn’t get drafted for combat. When the draft was restarted in 1940, Dad went before the draft board and because he was a specialized welder they said it was more important for him to work construction at a Navy base. Dad worked 6 years at the Charleston Navy Yards. He just felt that he didn’t do his fair share.
