Romney had, unsurprisingly, no nuance. It’s reckless to say that “The Palestinians” are not interested in peace, just as it would be reckless to say “The Israelis” are not.

I think it’s true the leadership of both groups is not in a peace-productive place. Netanyahu doesn’t want it. Abbas has to spend his energy not disintegrating. It’s therefore true a peace process isn’t going to take hold in the next 2-4- or even more years. But this problem will _not_ ‘solve itself’. And giving up on the process and the possibilities before you’re elected is a bad omen.

Nuance produces hope and in this case hope is something Romney wanted to to diminish. He believes, as I do, that the ultimately sought peace isn’t possible at this time and so its best not waste time on futile efforts to reach it. For the time being abandon hope in it and let’s refocus our efforts where they can do some good.
