I’m rather surprised at the seeming lack of sprinklers and fire doors that could have contained the fire.

Yeah, I’ve been reading that since I first heard about it this morning my time. The residents had been complaining that there innumerable safety issues and they were pretty much blown off.

Regarding sprinklers, the building was owned by the city council (sorta like Section 8 housing in the USA) and while the subject came up of retrofitting the building with a fire suppression system, the local council stated it couldn’t afford to do that.
