Some states have “duty to retreat” self defense laws, you literal can’t defend yourself until your back is against the wall.

I believe that the various factions are ‘Castle Doctrine’, ‘Stand Your Ground’, and ‘Duty to Retreat’.

I’d be interested to hear where in the U.S. each applies.
