I read an analysis of the data Zakaria’s talking about by Josh Marshall, whose take was that the people most affected were the ones who depended most on White Privilege to keep them ahead, and that with the fading of that they found themselves unable to stay ahead.

And that’s what things like Open Carry are about: White privilege. FDR’s New Deal and WW2 gave whites a lot of economic security, large enough that blacks and women could actually demand a share. But a lot of that has eroded, and Republicans are attempting to replace it with things that say “here’s what you can use to get your privilege back.”
