Well, simpler yes, but that would destroy the Conservative party forever as undemocratic. They won the election based on giving the referendum, and promised to bide by the result. Don’t get me wrong - I was against it, but sometimes decisions don’t go your way in a democracy.

If Labour took the opportunity and stood up and said we will stay in the EU it would be very interesting to see if lifelong Tory voters would actually risk putting them in power. Corbyn happens to have other Sanders-like policies that are rather too extreme for even more liberal-minded British voters’ tastes.
