I haven’t read the article, but I can guess they have sunk too much money into “keeping up with the Joneses,” who have at least two expensive cars, a boat, a vacation home, a McMansion, and kids in private schools. Their vacations are likely to far off places, where they hole up in ritzy hotels and only go to ritzy restaurants. IOW, lots of conspicuous consumption. Probably a lot of their income goes toward servicing debt, as well.

I would not mind trying out a $500K income for a year or two. I’d probably be able to save at least 75% of it.
