Another approach is a discussion of “political correctness”, often citing studies, in which the term “political correctness” is not defined or simply defined as “whatever strikes the interviewee as PC”.

In rural settings, “political correctness” means “Watching what you say when there’s one or more minorities in a group.” And that’s been driving white folk crazy ever since the 70s, when all that “equality” business meant the people they’d been raised to think of as “The Help” were suddenly competing with them for the “good jobs.” All their lives they’d been told that everybody had a “place” in society and theirs was at the big table. Now “those people” who would work for whatever they could get couldn’t be turned away from the head table, would put in longer hours and work harder shifts to get that piece of the pie that they’d been eyeing for ages.

It was about the same time that suddenly the conservatives had a real problem with “illegals,” as it was no longer politically acceptable to accuse black folks of being closet Communists looking to wreck polite society by pushing “equality.” So when they weren’t accusing unions of having nickeled and dimed businesses into sending all the “good jobs” away, they tried to use “illegals” as the source of all America’s economic ills.
