I have been asked to advise a trade group and a government regulatory panel on a serious problem out of China. In short when we demanded inexpensive jewelry, China used leaded brass. American manufacturers know better. China was told to stop using lead. They chose cadmium to substitute for lead. Next I suppose they will use mercury.

Thankfully I am able to advise this is not an issue with “fine” jewelry, sterling, gold, palladium and platinum.

But for costume or fashion jewelry, China is apt to export materials containing dangerous metals. So regulations will be promulgated again. And again, only because companies that know better but give in to craven greed or seek to please “authoritarian capitalist” communist masters.

Buyer Beware.
