Some friends of mine read a book about this phenomenon, and they’re currently experimenting with using smaller plates, which is supposed to help break you of this.

Average plate size has actually increased over the years dramatically. I read an article about this awhile ago where the writer researched this because she had to remodel the kitchen in the old home she had just bought because none of the plates she had gotten as wedding gifts would fit in the original cabinets. People do judge the amount of food they’re eating by how much of the plate sizes is covered, as plates increased so did portions.
